Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, AIIMS Guwahati.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, commenced its services with the establishment of the Institute. The vision of the Department is to evolve into a centre of excellence in women’s healthcare by integrating the three core pillars of AIIMS institutions: Education, Patient Care, and Research.

1. Education

The Department is actively involved in imparting high-quality education and training in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Undergraduate MBBS teaching started with the inception of the Institute, and postgraduate MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) courses commenced in 2022. The Department regularly organizes workshops, clinical teaching sessions, skill-based training, CMEs, and conferences to keep students and professionals updated with the latest advancements. Plans are underway to expand academic activities to include subspecialty fellowships and PhD programs in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, and gynaecological oncology.

2. Patient Care

The Department is committed to providing comprehensive and evidence-based care to women across all stages of life. Services include antenatal and postnatal care, high-risk pregnancy management, infertility evaluation and treatment, gynaecological oncology, urogynecology, and minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries. The labour rooms are designed to ensure respectful, safe, and dignified childbirth. Dedicated clinics for family planning, menopause management, preventive health, and a Well-Woman Clinic cater to holistic women’s health needs. The Department has also integrated advanced technologies such as 3D laparoscopy to enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes.

3. Research

Research is one of the core priorities of the Department, focusing on maternal and reproductive health, gynaecological cancers, infertility, adolescent health, and preventive women’s healthcare. The Department undertakes faculty-led projects, postgraduate theses, intramural and extramural funded research, and multicentric collaborative studies. The aim is to generate evidence that informs policy, improves clinical practice, and advances innovation in women’s health.
