The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, commenced its services with the establishment of the Institute. The vision of the Department is to evolve into a centre of excellence in women’s healthcare by integrating the three core pillars of AIIMS institutions: Education, Patient Care, and Research.
1. Education
The Department is actively involved in imparting high-quality education and training in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Undergraduate MBBS teaching started with the inception of the Institute, and postgraduate MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) courses commenced in 2022. The Department regularly organizes workshops, clinical teaching sessions, skill-based training, CMEs, and conferences to keep students and professionals updated with the latest advancements. Plans are underway to expand academic activities to include subspecialty fellowships and PhD programs in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, and gynaecological oncology.
2. Patient Care
The Department is committed to providing comprehensive and evidence-based care to women across all stages of life. Services include antenatal and postnatal care, high-risk pregnancy management, infertility evaluation and treatment, gynaecological oncology, urogynecology, and minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries. The labour rooms are designed to ensure respectful, safe, and dignified childbirth. Dedicated clinics for family planning, menopause management, preventive health, and a Well-Woman Clinic cater to holistic women’s health needs. The Department has also integrated advanced technologies such as 3D laparoscopy to enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes.
3. Research
Research is one of the core priorities of the Department, focusing on maternal and reproductive health, gynaecological cancers, infertility, adolescent health, and preventive women’s healthcare. The Department undertakes faculty-led projects, postgraduate theses, intramural and extramural funded research, and multicentric collaborative studies. The aim is to generate evidence that informs policy, improves clinical practice, and advances innovation in women’s health.

To provide focused and holistic care, the department has established dedicated specialised clinics:
The Department is dedicated to fostering student growth through advancements in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, nurturing clinical competence, scientific curiosity, critical thinking, ethical values, and practical expertise. It initiated MBBS teaching with the inception of the Institute in January 2021, followed by the commencement of the MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) program in January 2022. The Department envisions expanding its academic activities in the future to include fellowship programs in subspecialties such as maternal–fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and gynaecological oncology, as well as PhD opportunities in women’s health research. Additionally, the Department offers specialized training modules for allied health and nursing students and actively contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations with other specialties. Regular workshops, skill-based training programs, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions are conducted to disseminate knowledge and keep pace with recent advances in maternal and reproductive health. The Department is also involved in providing training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to the B.Sc. (Nursing) students of the Institute.
